Chapter 3

The Garfagnana

When travelling with kids, incorporating fun, outdoor activities is a must or they will get bored (and drive their parents insane). A trip to the Garfagnana area in northern Tuscany is the perfect solution not only for those looking for a break from all the art and museums in Florence and Siena, but for any family that enjoys spending time outdoors. Whether you plan on staying in the area for a number of days—soaking in the crisp mountain air, hiking, biking, and touring around the majestic Apuan Alps—or you’re just passing by for a day and looking for family-friendly activities, the Garfagnana area has a lot to offer. From caves and natural reserves to adventure parks and quarries, you will find it all here. The many attractions in this area have been divided into two itineraries and (as always) can be easily mixed and matched. However, before doing so, take the time to study the maps. This is a very hilly area, and what may seem like a measly 20-km ride between two towns can turn out to be an hour-long drive down a very winding (and sometimes stressful) road.
